Stand-up Comedy: Origins, Development, Education, and Romanian Perspectives of a Comic Form

Abstract

Humor is a very powerful weapon, it can change mentalities, induce ideas, propose new behaviors. The stand-up comedy phenomenon has taken a strong lead, it is enjoyed and consumed by a large and diverse audience. By briefly analyzing the genre, the history and emergence of the phenomenon and its development, in social and educational contexts, this paper tries to contribute to understanding the importance of producing quality comedy, avoiding not only the distortion of the artistic act, but also the decay of society. Some Romanian Perspectives of this comic form are also analyzed.

Author Biography

Diana Roșca

DIANA ROȘCA is a stand-up comedian, interested in both the historical and theoretical aspects of the phenomenon, and in its practical ones. Her scientific activity in recent years has been very intense, carried out both in Romania and abroad. She participated in courses and conferences at Washington and Lee University (Lexington), University of Virginia (Charlottesville), National University of Theater and Cinematography (Bucharest). As a practitioner, she has performed live shows in Washington, Richmond, Madrid, London, in military bases in Romania, but also online shows for the Romanian communities in the USA and the EU. She collaborated with students and graduates of the Writing for Late Night Comedy program at the University of California Los Angeles.
